I have been getting a lot of questions about Mae Movement and what it means. The last post was all about how we started but today I wanted to go a little further. Do not worry it will still be a motivation Monday post :)

Last year when I was diagnosed with Chronic Insomnia... let me just say that is a novel in of itself,
I put a quote on my chalk board in my studio... " Let her sleep for when she wakes she will move mountains." I slept about an 1/2 hour to an hour every night for months. Just after of week of little sleep, I became rather ill from it, I was pulled out of school for my senior year and was at the doctors constantly. I would wake up in the night and early mornings to draw, paint, dream, etc. I designed and dreamed up Mae Movement, because I did not want my current condition to make me loose sight of vision. The quote for me was hope that I was going to get over this mountain. Mountains became a very symbolic thing for me and I felt like they showed up all time. I felt ok when I woke up, very alert but around 6 in the morning the pain started. I could feel every nerve in my body and it begged for sleep but I just couldn't. Then around 8 my body gave out, and I would black out for hours. When I finally would wake up I was so week because it felt like I was in a boxing match, I had very poor motor skills, I fell a lot and dropped more dishes and plates than I could keep track of. I also suffered from cognitive memory loss and had a hard time finding the right words. I kept those details from the people at school so nobody really knew what was going on and the " why isn't Haley in school, its just a sleep problem." started...

I was afraid of letting people down. My family, friends, our movers and my subscribers on youtube. I was trying to be a light, to inspire people on health and lifestyle tips, but how could I in this condition. Over the corse of about  4 months I felt like I had lost myself. I was not strong anymore, I certainly could not run 1/2 marathon, I was lucky if I felt strong enough to get myself to the doctors. I was moody, miserable and I am almost positive my family did not know this person I had become. My dreams of going to New York City for Art school seemed to evaporate. Most of all my attitude on life was becoming negative. I did not see the light at the end of the tunnel, the top of that mountain was nowhere in sight and my faith was not strong. If it was not for Dee I really do not know what would have happened to me. No matter how mean I was she always said " Hale I have to Love you through it." I did not deserve that. I knew how terrible I was acting but in my mind I couldn't help it. That is why so many of my post's deal with the power of self talk and choosing your  happiness, because trust me, for months I had to work hard to overcome it.

I also dealt with extreme anxiety of not being in school, worrying about what people thought of me and socially I had become a hermit. I was very involved in school, sports, vice president of my school and the Delaware state student senate, theater, worship team, you name it I did it. So when all of sudden I was just gone, cut off from everyone and everything it caused a lot of rumors and negative talk about me. What hurt the most was some of the talk was coming from people I thought were my friends, I felt like a freak and very alone.

Before Insomnia in September and during Insomnia in the Winter
( yes I even started to lose my hair, thats what it looks scraggly)
It did not have my picture taken at all the first few months so this was when I was doing better.

I got to a point in February where I was sleeping 3 hours a night which was HUGE for me. I started telling myself I was going to go into school for an afternoon to see my friends But there was that self talk again. I was letting fear control me. Dee kept telling me to try. Just try and push yourself, step out of your comfort zone.  Do you know it took me a month to finally go in, but I tried it, I did it, and slowly I was able to go in, I even managed to work past my anxieties and went on the senior class trip. I did re-lapse again in the spring right after IMATS... crazy to think of the timing of all of this. So the next mountain for me.... was graduation. I almost let myself not walk at graduation. I can not imagine now, how I would have felt if I did not walk with my class. Again I had to wrestle with myself, push aside the fear my not feeling accepted by my class and me not feeling like I deserved it. Walking at graduation was a huge accomplishment but if I would have never made the decision to TRY, I would have never went into school, never gone on the trip, or graduated with my class.

I truly believe all this happened as test. Satan tries to bring us down and get in the way of us reaching our full potential. If it had never happened to me Mae movement would not have the substance and the real life examples it needed. I most certainly would not have been as aware of the life lessons we talk about.  I would never have come up with all those healthy sweets recipes because before insomnia I NEVER had a sweet tooth but lack of sleep will make you crave sugar !!!! so I had to figure out a way to handle it but in a healthy way : ) The past year I had to try different things that were way out of my comfort zone I had no choice but to approach life from a different angle.... A TRY-angle ;) Mountains in a sense are triangles. If you think you can not get over that mountain, chances are you have not tried yet. Every accomplishment starts with the decision to TRY.

Like I said this story is long enough to be a few chapters in book and who knows mae-be one day it will ;)

As always,

Much Love and Many Blessings

What is Mae Movement?

Thursday, January 17, 2013

We get a lot of questions about "what Mae Movement really is", and how did it start? where did the name come from?

Well to tell you the truth it is a whole lot of things, a whole lot of stories and I would need a book to honestly explain everything. I am sure a lot of you only know about the bracelets, right? Well the bracelets are beautiful and we love them but they just the beginning for us.

Dee and I have a vision for Mae Movement far beyond them and we are excited to be moving forward. We are constantly growing, all humans are and that is what makes us so a-MAE-zing ;)

As we grow, Mae Movement grows and develops. Trying new things, going out of your comfort zone, growth in your relationships, helping another soul. They ALL are movements that generate, a larger one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Two years ago this week marks the anniversary of my clean eating and fitness journey. Before that I struggled with confidence in so many areas in my life. Doing something to improve the quality of my life ended up being such a positive and influential movement for not only me but so many others, because I teach and share my experiences with living a healthy life. I always had aspirations of helping others but because I lacked self esteem I would not try out for leadership roles in school or really use my voice to speak my own truth. When I finally set my mind to my goals and achieved them, I was able to do so many things that I did not think I could do before. That was when we found the bracelets... or I should say the bracelets found us. We never intended on selling them full time, but they started to sell themselves with out us trying. friends, family, co-workers even ladies in the check out line at the grocery store wanted them and wanted to know more about the women of Nepal who make these precious little bracelets. I realized it was great platform to use to speak about in my student government conferences, because it was entrepreneurial and it made a difference in someones overall quality of life. Over the course of a year, Dee and I spoke at trade shows, and other local events. The bracelets wound up playing a huge role in our lives. They were even bringing us to different states, I don't really know how. All I know is the bracelets were always a part of it and each time Dee and I would travel, A-MAE-ZING things would happen. We have met people and learned about their movements, shared stories and let me tell you. Those real life experiences are where the growth happens. You can learn so much from another persons story. Then it all started to come together. I loved health and wellness, Dee loves Personal growth and  helping others... ( she is one of the most selfless people I know). So many signs came up for us through out the year that were reoccurring symbols and words. We talk in metaphors a lot within our brand. Waves, ships, mountains, love, infinity, etc.

This was my 10th grade homecoming on the left and the picture on the right was my senior graduation.

Adventures With Dee

WHERE DID THE NAME COME FROM

We played around with names for months... no really it took forever! Dee and I practically paced around our office, aka the pit, aka our dinning room and could not agree on a name to save our lives. For any of you that do not know this, MAE is my middle name. We tried using both of our names, our initials, my brothers, dad, cat, dog, you named it we tried it... well just not the cat and dog part. I noticed a trend in our lingo at the events we did and the motivational  post's we had on Facebook, used words like amazing, make and made. Then one day it clicked. Made and Maed, stemming from my middle name. It was perfect. I loved it. Not only was it personal but it maed sense. see what I did there ;) We added movement because that is the goal! to generate a movement by maeking yourself the best you can be so you can Maek someone else the best they can be too! As we have worked with name it really became a part of us, I would not want to call it anything else. What is even more special is hearing other people say the name or use it in a blog or instagram post. What defines Mae Movement is growth, we will never know 100% what it means simply because it is always going to be growing because we are always growing.

Where is Mae Movement Going?
I am an artist, a designer, a health and fitness nut, a self proclaimed instigator  and inspor-ator. I have big dreams for this brand. Meshing it all together is goal. Inspirational designs, an awesome community of Movers... meaning you :) A whole lot of faith and hard work has gotten us this far and we are going to keep moving.

So What is Mae Movement? It is a mountain, a wave, it is infinite, it is love. Its the ships that mae have not left the harbor yet, or it it the one toughing it out on the open water's.  Whatever it is, Maek it yours and Maek your move.
Its your turn, what will you move today?

Love and blessings

Simple Steps for overall Happiness...
POST 1
This will be a three part post :)

We are all on the same boat in one way or another. Well... sort of. A Boat that will take us to the same destination... Happiness. However you may be on a sail boat, coasting along the shore line, easy breezy. While someone else may be on a fishing boat, in rough, uncharted waters. Both boats will eventually get back to port, but how will each one get there? They certainly will not take the same corse, that is for sure. They will not encounter the same obstacles, and they most likely they will arrive at port at different times.
You being the captain of this boat, map out your route. Carefully trying to avoid these obstacles. You can not always see everything that is ahead, but, you can prepare yourself. Your ship carries the tools to tackle these situations, to make your voyage less stressful. They are there for you, you just have to use them.

1. Sometimes listening too your First Mae*t is essential.

We all want to be right all the time, it is how we are wired. We would rather jump at the chance to argue with someone over who is right or wrong. Half the time it ends up being more about that, than the actual problem. We need to just sit back, and think " would I rather be right, or would I rather be kind." What happiness is being " right " really bringing you?

2. The Sails during a storm.

Have you ever tried to hold down a ship, in a storm? Or better yet tried doing it by yourself? yeah me either. There are things in life that we have ZERO control over and that is OK! It makes me think of the  Parable in the Bible where Jesus Slept through the storm at sea. Now I know we all have different beliefs but regardless the Bible is beautiful Literature and I think you can take something from it no matter what you believe. Sometimes we just have to sleep through the storm. Just wait in the situation and allow things to be as is. Trust me you will feel better

“By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try. The world is beyond winning.” Lao Tzu
3. Your Boat is bigger than my Boat...

Do not blame others for what you don't have. You are the Captain no matter what type of boat you have. Do not give the power away just because you feel inferior. Take responsibility for you life. You too can have a bigger boat.

4. Give up your self-defeating self talk.

“The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive.” Eckhart Tolle
Like I said your ship is equipped with tools, too help you on your voyage. Use them wrongly and you can very easily get off track. That is how our mind works. Your mind can feed you negative, polluted, self defeating thoughts, but you ARE better than that.

5. Give up on Limited Beliefs

Why is your anchor still down. Yes you. You know what I mean. You have not even left Port! You do not think you can handle the journey, I get it. It is ok, but do not worry about what you can and can not do. From now on you are not going to let your fears keep you stuck in the wrong place. Pull up your anchor and sail.

It is a lot to take in. So just think about it. What are some things that are keeping you from overall happiness? Write them down, keep them somewhere you will see, like your planner, on your bathroom mirror. Start thinking about ways you can overcome your old self-talk. The next Five Tips in the series will be up next Tuesday.
Go be A-MAE-ZING.

LOVE
Haley and DEE

Foodie Friday!

Friday, January 11, 2013

What a week Movers! It is so exciting to see how much interaction we have had over on Instagram. Keeping with my healthy lifestyle movement, I have promised some of the recipes I have made this week. Remember the weekend is a great time to get on track! not get off! Read your goals, make good food choices, motivate someone, be active, have "me" time! Your Mind, Body and Soul with thank you later!

So starting off with two from earlier this week...

                                                                   The Apple Pie Smoothie

In a blender, I use a Ninja.
1 chopped apple with skins
1/4 cup Greek Yogurt
2 Tablespoons 1% Cottage Cheese
1 Tablespoon Cinnamon
1 Teaspoon ground or fresh Ginger
1/2 Teaspoon Nutmeg
1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
1 teaspoon of ground flax, I used spectrum brand
1/2 Maca powder this is optional
6 Ice cubes depending on how creamy you want it
1/2 Tablespoon Gaur Gum, it is a 100% fiber supplement used for thickening
3 Tablespoons of Stevia, you could use agave or honey If you do not mind the sugar
BLEND
Topped it with toasted almonds and apple chips!

Italian Herb Chicken, with Balsamic Basil roasted Tomatoes

I make 1 serving so go ahead and double, triple or quadruple it for your family! Now I for the most part just sprinkle my herbs and spices. So it is an "eyeball it" situation.
Preheat your oven to 400 F and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.

1 Chicken Breast sliced in half ( place on foiled baking sheet)
Eye Ball....
Fresh Black Pepper
Garlic Powder
Dried Basil
Dried Oregano
5 sliced Cherry tomatoes
2 Tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar
pinch of Stevia
A few Fresh Basil Leaves

I add the herbs and spices to my Chicken, place the tomatoes on top, then crack more black pepper on the tomatoes. Sprinkle the Stevia and little bit extra garlic power... what can I say I am a true Italian ;)
I try to drizzle the Balsamic over the tomatoes, not the chicken. It is obviously going to seep onto the chicken but by focusing it on the tomatoes, they will caramelize nicely in the over.
I then Roast the Chicken and Tomatoes for about 25 minutes.
I serves it with fresh basil on top. If you do not have any healthy fats in your sides dishes feel free to add a drizzle of olives oil or a teaspoon of pine nuts!
Enjoy!

Have a Great Weekend!

Healthy Vanilla Frappuccino!

Thursday, January 10, 2013

                                                      Happy Thirsty Thursday Movers!

This week has been incredible! so much Love on our facebook, twitter and instagram. It is so inspiring to here what you are all doing in your lives to better yourselves and others, keep it up! Earlier in the week I posted this photo...
I LOVE coffee and I LOVE frappuccino's! However they are super high in calories and sugar, yikes!
So I decided to make my own healthier version!

Freeze 1 cup of coffee, I prefer a flavored one like french vanilla, into ice cube trays.
Freeze 1 cup of almond milk into ice cube trays.

If you don't have time to freeze the almond milk or coffee you can substitute normal ice cubes, however you will need to add a good tablespoon of espresso to the mix.

Into a Blender,

Blend the coffee and almond milk ice cubes.

Add

3 Tbl Egg Whites
3 Tbl Almond milk
1/4 cup Stevia or 10 drops of liquid stevia
2 tsp gaur gum ( thickening agent, you could also use protein powder )
splash of vanilla extract.

extra add-in's

cocoa powder
cinnamon
almond extract
coconut oil

top is off with a little TruWhip :)
Enjoy!
P.s Last night we reached 1500 followers on instagram! Thanks a million!

Keep Going

Monday, January 7, 2013

I am really excited about today.

Yes it is Monday. Nobody likes Monday. It is the day you go back to school, work and the hustle and bustle of the week begins again. This Monday is different. I feel like I have broken through something.
For some you may think after reading this, that it is not that big of a realization, but it is for me, and I feel the need to share it.

Things happen in life that can make us or brake us. you are faced with decisions on a daily basis, that affect you or someone around you. YOU make these decisions and YOU experience these things. now... YOU need to be the one who decides on how you let them affect you. I have talked about it a little bit, but the past two years have not only been absolutely wonderful and exciting, but they have also been the hardest year's of my life. I am so guilty of letting my circumstances weigh me down. There was a time when because something did not go right or thing's over a period of time just did not seem to get better, I would stop. I'd shutdown. I could not see past the negative. So my thoughts were negative, my words were negative and as hard I tried I felt as if there was a mental block keeping me from moving forward... The mental block was me.

Being the impatient, Italian-German that I am.... come on, if you are one, you know what I am talking about. I tried quick fixes, or would not know what to do with myself so I waisted more time thinking about what to do than ever actually trying it. Anxiety is a real bugger I happen to suffer from it, but over the last month it has really eased up and I think it has a lot to with what I am about to tell you.

Feeling paralyzed by your own thoughts is a terrible feeling. It can begin really control your life. When I let my paralyzed, anxious mind make decisions for me, I am holding myself back. You are probably thinking... "Haley you sounds like are talking about to personalities." No I am not. We are not our true selves, acting with our full potential when we are in a rut. We were not created to be fearful of life, we are supposed to embrace and take it by force and make each day better than the last. I know not all of you are of the Christian Faith, but I believe everyone could take something from these principles and relate them to their own life.
I read a devotional today that spoke about having positive expectations. I can not tell you how many times I would think the worst about something before it happened. Over the past few months I have really been trying to go out of my comfort zone and say YES to thing's that normally I would have turned down. One of those thing's is my diet. Yes, I said it, I will admit I am rigid and get very habitual with my food. I did a Tone It Up 5 day slim down and really had to push myself to not eat my normal food. As silly as it sounds, I think it helped me be more open to other things. Like changing up my workout routine, being more flexible with my schedule and hanging out with friends. I noticed overall I was happier, lighter in my spirit. I did not let things get to me so much. I have tried numerous times to get even close to wear I am today, I wanted to just give up somedays, but you really do have to just keep going.

One thing that I am able to do now is go for longer runs than my usual 20 min HIIT run. It is not that I couldn't endure the run, it is that I have a " time" issue, always worrying about not having enough of it. So the thought of a long run stressed me out. Today however I told myself I was going to do it. At one point my anxious mind said no stay inside and do 30 minutes on the treadmill. I wrestled with myself and so "no", I am going to do it. So I did, I ran longer than I planed, I told myself to keep going. I was so happy the rest of the day, overcoming that thing that use to hold me back.

You may not be a runner, but I am sure there is something in your life may come up for you often, it scares you and turn it down. Or maybe you are dealing with a situation that you just can not seem to break free from. No matter how long it has been, no matter how tired you are and now matter how many battle's you have lost. Your mind gives up before your soul. Tell yourself YES and just KEEP GOING. It will be worth it at the finish line.

God Bless,

Haley Cairo

Food Friday-Healthy Ice-Cream Sandwiches

Friday, January 4, 2013

I LOVE sweets just as much as the next person. However, I am not feeling the love back...
I cut out white sugar from my diet... just realized this... but it was exactly 2 years ago! So Happy Anniversary to me!

I Follow the  Tone It Up Nutrition Plan and love my online trainer' s Karena and Katrina and you will too! Check them out, they are are beautiful and such inspirations.

Last night I had a bit of a sweet tooth and instead of eating something I would regret the next day I looked in my pantry and grabbed my flax cookies. Then I ate one... good but not satisfied. So I opened my fridge and saw TruWhip... a light bulb went off! Ice-cream sandwiches!
Photo: Genius. A healthy ice cream sandwich why didn't I think of this sooner ! @karenakatrina #LoveYourBody #VSX #100byvday #eatclean
About 30 seconds later, this little devil was born. The Go Raw Brand is a wonderful. They carry sweet and savory flavor's of flax chip's. They are gluten, wheat and nut free! Flax seed is a heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke preventing super food.  They contain Omega-3 essential fatty acids, "good" fats that have been shown to have heart healthy effects. They also contain Lignans and Fiber! Lignans which have both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities. Flaxseed contains 75-800 times ore lignans than other plant foods. Flaxseed contains both the soluble and insoluble types of fiber as well!

No the Truwhip on the other hand is not a superfood but it is a great alternative to the un-healthy whipped topping's! Un-link Cool Whip and Ready Whip, Truwhip is 100% natural, 70% organic, contains no GMO's, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, and no Polysorbate 60. It is also trans fat and gluten free!

So if you get those late night sugar cravings, treat you self to something a little sweets, without feeling the guilt!

Happy Friday!

Thirsty Thursday- Kombucha Tea!

Thursday, January 3, 2013

                           Kombucha!

Have you heard of Kombucha, the beverage the ancient Chinese called the “Immortal Health Elixir?” It’s been around for more than 2,000 years and has a rich anecdotal history of preventing and fighting cancer, arthritis, and other degenerative diseases. First, there’s all the benefits of detoxification, such as healthy livers and cancer prevention. One of kombucha’s greatest health benefits is its ability to detox the body. It makes the body alkaline.

Why is having an alkaline body important?

The Alkalinity in your body is measured the same way another PH is measured, 0 to 14 with 7 being the neutral point. When the body's Blood sugar falls above 7, 7.5 being ideal, the body is balanced. Outside of this range the body is no longer optimal and the metabolism is out of balance.

The little Things

  • If you have a slight pH fluctuation and your body becomes more acidic than it should be, your body immediately begins to exhibit symptoms of an imbalance. These symptoms may be considered little, like a runny nose, fatigue, a skin breakout and can even aid in irritable bowl symptoms.
Fewer Colds

  • An acidic environment promotes the growth of bad bacteria, yeast and fungi. The imbalance of your body's good bacteria makes you more prone to infections.
Cancer prevention

  • A major benefit of having an alkaline body state is that you might reduce your risk for developing cancer. When your body is too acidic, oxygen levels are lowered and cellular metabolism stops. This can lead to the growth of cancer cells. Maintaing an alkaline state helps encourage healthy cell turnover, which the key in the prevention of cancer.
Healthy Weight

  • Fruits and vegetables make your body more alkaline while processed foods, sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol make you more acidic. By eating alkalizing foods, you are more likely to maintain a healthy weight. The frequent consumption of acid-producing foods is more likely to contribute to a weight problem.
Here are some of our favorites Kombucha tea's!

Reed's Kombucha Tea is a new favorite! The Synergy Brand is a long time favorite, both are equally refreshing and delicious! You can purchase Kombucha at Whole Foods and most health stores!
Let us know your favorite Kombucha tea! If you have not tried Kombucha, give it a shot and tell us which one you tried!

Have a blessed Thursday Mover!
